Looking for a place to do yoga on Long Island two years ago was like work. When I’m on the road finding studios to practice yoga was not much different than finding good surf spots in my younger days. But two years ago, when it came to yoga, Long Island seemed to be as studio stunted, like its summer surf.
This year was a down right surprised! There were not enough days in the week for me to explore new places to put my mat. The other extraordinary discovery was how many active surfers are doing yoga and a bigger surprise is, how many are woman. Even Gilgo Beach, one of my favorite break spots has sunset yoga on the bayside. A perfect end to a day in the waves—if I was still surfing.
When I first gave up surfing there remained a need in me that being on a board in a wave provided. It was not only a beautiful sport—the dynamic of being in the immense majestic ocean as a humble visitor, gave me perspective on how I viewed and lived life.
I still had a need to be connected to a community of people like I did with surfers, who for over 3 decades were the primary humans I related. The longest of any peer group in my life.
Surfing didn’t end for me just one day after a ride, it took time. I was like an alcoholic moving through sobriety every day. Bending at the knees was painful and it took longer to stand up, so good rides were getting few and far between. Eventually I gave into my knees and gave out to Yoga.
Yoga started much like surfing did in 7th grade. I was awkward, intimated, but in Yoga unlike surfing, I was a minority! There were not a lot of woman surfers and now I knew what it was like for a brave female soul to paddle out with the big boy dogs.
At first, I didn’t like being a minority to stronger more poised woman—until I realized that was my ego talking. The community in every yoga studio had a friendly vibe. Plus no one ever talked about what wave you miss yesterday. Instead it was about today!
After some years doing Asanas, I came to find that it was like surfing because you need balance and agility. Beyond the sporting aspects there are other subtleties. The mat was my board and I was singularly alone and could practice as I liked. When I’m done the mat gets washed down like my old surfboard, ready for the next outing.
When I’m traveling I can drop-in at any yoga studio in the country to do yoga like visiting a new beach, except no says, “you should have been hear yesterday it was perfect.” The reason is because the present is as it should be –perfect! Yoga may not be as exhilarating as when you first catch the first wave of the day but it has no serious faux pas either, like dropping-in on another surfer’s wave.
What is most appealing to me is that no day is exactly the same. Every location where I have ever done yoga or for that matter any individual class, is like a new beach or a new wave. All of them are unique and spiritually beautiful. Each day I walk into a yoga class I know it will be different and that I will take out more then I put in!
These days I look for yoga places like I did beaches, hoping for new experiences that improve, enhance, and bless my life.
