I acquired Nellcôte 2015 ‘Rallye 76’, for a sit-down, drink with Exile on Main Street. Like good wine I never tire of Exile’s complexities, depth of sound and statements of truth about the world at that time.
When it was released, I wasn’t paying attention, sporting a parochial school uniform, later a lacrosse stick, and then bare feet for wave catching —but I soon caught the Rolling Stones!
This wine is relevant to me because Villa Nellcôte St. Jean-Cap Ferrat in the South France, built in the late 1890’s, was once owned by a survivor of the Titanic and I too survived icebergs and sinking’s.
Then in the 70’s it was leased to Keith Richards during a yearlong period to recorded “Exile on Mainstreet”.
That album stayed with me for a long time because as a double set it was filled with countless, diverse, and experimental material. My top five songs became, Torn & Frayed, Loving Cup, Ventilator Blues, Let It Loose, and Shine a Light.
By college, The Clash released “London Calling” and it changed my musical taste forever but not my love for the Stones or my taste in wine.
Nellcôte 2015 is silky, concentrated, lavishly rich, packed with cocoa bean, espresso, and blue fruits for days. Aged 22 months in French oak it is powerful, polished, with an incredibly long mouthcoating of blackberry essence.
I always go back to Exile because it somehow fits my rebel soul. Nellcôte is much the same not only for opulent taste or the Rolling Stones, but the romance of the vintner’s rich family history of racing at Monaco.
So, here’s to us and to Mick Jagger at 79 years old, still giving it his plush best, either here in Scottsdale, at the Four Seasons or anywhere around the world.
