The names and faces of young Harvard students linked to a statement judged as anti-Israel, being plastered on mobile billboards and online sites is unadulterated intimidation. Obviously paid for by someone not on a college students’ budget.
It clearly exposes blatant manipulation by special interest groups to control the narrative. Using the word antisemitism to regulate opinions is no different than painting people communist in the McCarthy era. Our colleges must be safe harbors for alternative, contradictory, and even inflammatory thought, should we ever expect to evolve intellectually.
If changing public opinion about Israel has come to that, there must be much to hide. Truth must flourish uninhibited on campuses where open and fertile minds thrive, because it certainly has not happened in Congress. Nearly 400 in House of Representatives backed a resolution expressing U.S. solidarity with Israel promising to spend on emergency security assistance. No one voiced humanitarian support for innocent women and children living in Gaza. Nearly 400 of those same named in the resolution, received funding from the Israeli lobby group AIPAC.
The basis for the Harvard students argument is simply rethink the relationship. Israeli receives the most American aid but not held to a humanitarian standard for killing two-and-a-half-year-old Mohammed al-Tamimi, murdered journalists, and an American aid worker. Israeli never participated in American led military coalitions but behind oil prices spiking in 1973 that caused our worst recession to date. Now their forces are mercilessly, revenge bombing a small group of civilians for a gorilla attack. An irony not lost on Vladimir Putin.
College student organizations claiming that Israel is “entirely responsible” for the country’s war against Hamas, albeit flawed in its absoluteness, is valid free speech. Truth should not be held hostage with overused nomenclature. Rich lobby groups trying to crush that through bullying should be the ones exposed and shamed. Suppressing open discourse using fabricated words like antisemitism allows myopic ambitions of Zionism zealots, similar but opposite of Aryanism in Germany in the 1930’s. Israel was a gift given in good faith and not by an act of God that permits violence against other humans who are equally God’s children.
The Palestinian holocaust has been ongoing since 1948 and it needs to be addressed without hypocrisy. The US condemns the atrocities of Hamas, but not the atrocities of Israel. Putin cannot force his will on Ukraine but Netanyahu can force a scorched earth policy to wipe out the remaining population in a planned ethnic cleansing. Disproportionate get even attacks on civilians will be accepted by politicians if they are being fed with special interest dollars. So, academia must be the bastion of truth and permitted a clear runway to speak freely without fear of retaliation.
World leaders seeing this behavior, are increasingly concerned about destabilization in the Middle East, and have been critical of Netanyahu designating Hamas as a terrorist organization. Rogers Waters recently said, “Fight against the Nazis that I have now in front of me.” But Americans miss the plight of Palestinian people because Israeli news sources are masterful at covering up and diverting with systematic finger-pointing. The final obstacle in annexing land in Gaza stolen by Israeli in the 1967 war was Nobel Peace Prize winner Yasser Arafat. While president of PNA he was mysteriously assassinated by polonium poisoning and subsequent Jewish settlement in Gaza escalated.
Israel seeds news with Americans at risk in the war to keep their support base distracted from oppression, bulldozed Palestinians homes, murdered protesters, and Palestinian pushed into slums like 1940’s Jewish ghettos in Poland, which is why many found it hard to comprehend why on the morning of October 7th, Hamas militants broke out of the Gaza Strip. Approximately 2 million Palestinians were unable to leave an outdoor prison, because of Israelis extensive restrictions. If people are not treated humanely, they revolt. Americans did in 1776 for that very reason.
The US recently criticized the political corruption within the Israeli court system putting Benjamin Netanyahu in a desperate fight for political survival. Spin and cover up can no longer hide accusations that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu may have cleverly created empathy through violence to acquire support from Jews around the world. In behavioral terms, those who use crisis for empathy to garner support to do wrong are sociopaths. Ethnic cleaning is not acceptable, under Hitler, in Kosovo, or Macedonia. Never on this earth. Time to shine a light on the, too many, evil actors in the world. Simply look at the all countries at war, or the long list of white-collar crimes by sociopaths in America alone. We cannot allow them to hide any longer.
To have a diplomatic response for peace and coexistence in Palestine, or for any minority, anywhere on the planet. The first step is a healthy free speech dialog and college campuses are where that can happen. Providing they are kept as places without bullying and painting twenty-year-olds as anti-Semites for their opinions. It is our democratic duty to assure there is no room in America for free speech sequester.
